Local search engine optimization (SEO) is part mystery, part science, part art, and part gnashing of teeth.

It sounds amazing. Add some pages to your site with keywords you want to rank for, wait a couple of minutes, and, boom, Google is sending your hordes of traffic … FOR FREE!

It may have been this easy in 1995 (actually I don’t think it was ever that simple), but now that every business on the planet has a website, the process has become significantly more difficult and complex.

Of course, the difficulty is on a continuum as keywords vary wildly in how much competition there is for those coveted page one Google, Bing, and Yahoo placements.

If you want your website to show up on Google when someone in your service area searches for keywords relevant to your business I can help.

What You Need to Make Local SEO Work For Your Business

technical seo local business

Technical SEO
This is the cornerstone. You have to make sure your site is technically sound. Can Google spiders crawl your important pages, so they can be indexed in the results? Is your site speed acceptable? Is your site built with clean code? Google checks all of this stuff.

Relevant Content (On-Page SEO)
The bottom line is you need to write good content that is useful to your readers. That’s where you start. Good things come out of that. By helping answer your visitors questions, you become a trusted advisor. If the blog posts and pages are compelling enough, they’ll be liked and shared on social and commented on. These are Google ranking factors. Also, you’ll get better time on site metrics and lower bounce rates. This also helps your SEO.

And, if you’re really good, you will attract links back to your site. Despite what naysayers post to drive controversy, links are still the coin of the realm in SEO.

Finally, the most basic reason you need content. You can’t rank for keywords that aren’t actually on your website. Technically, that’s not totally true. Google’s search technology is getting more sophisticated. They are using a thing called latent semantic indexing to infer what a page might be about. So, maybe, in rare cases you could rank for silver car, while only referring to vehicles as automobiles on your page. But, you’d be lucky. All the most respected SEO experts and tools still consider exact keywords as the lifeblood of on-page SEO.

Oh, and you still need to get your header tags, image alt tags, meta title and description, etc. right.

If you want to rank for Anaheim bakery, Google wants to see indicators that your business is actually in Anaheim. So, you want to plaster your address on every page of your site. Schema can help with this.

The more competitive the keyword, the more external links to your site you are going to need.

It’s unbelievably important to have your NAP+W (name, address, phone, and website) consistent on all of the important directories, review sites, etc. And, you need to know which placements can help your business and which can actually hurt. Time consuming stuff, but well worth it for search engine exposure.
